Soya Isoflavones & Red Clover: Isoflavones are oestrogen like compounds that can help modulate the effects of the stronger natural oestrogen and testosterone produced by the body. Scientific studies have shown that isoflavones, (as in soya and red clover) can halve the incidence and severity of hot flushes as well as helping relieve other symptoms of menopause such as irritability and vaginal dryness.
Wild Yam: The starting material in the manufacture of “the Pill”, the root and bulb of wild yam contain the chemical diosgenin, which can be made into various steroids (such as oestrogen and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA)) and is often used as a natural alternative to oestrogen therapy especially to help alleviate vaginal dryness in older women, for PMS (premenstrual syndrome), menstrual cramps, weak bones (osteoporosis), low energy levels and low sex drive. It can also be beneficial to apply wild yam creams to the skin to reduce menopausal symptoms such as hot flashes.
Sage Leaf: Contains diterpene bitters, volatile oil, flavonoids and rosmarinic acid, having a tonic effect on the female reproductive system and highly beneficial for irregular menstruation and menstrual cramps. Due to its oestrogenic effect, sage leaf can also be effective in alleviating symptoms of menopause including anxiety, fatigue, night sweats, hot flashes and mood swings.
Pfafia: (aka Brazilian Ginseng, Suma and Paratudo) traditionally used by Amazon Indians for thousands of years and extensively studied by American and Japanese scientists, pfafia is very popular with women going through the menopause or PMS in these countries to relieve symptoms of hormonal imbalance. Also an adaptogen and restorative tonic.
Schisandra Chinensis: Considered an adaptogen(natural substances that are believed to stimulate the body’s resistance to physical, environmental, and emotional stressors). Can also help to improve liver function, increase energy, fortify and strengthen the body and help enhance resistance to disease and stress.
Hops: Hops contain natural plant oestrogens, volatile oil and resin and have been discovered to contain one of the most powerful of phytoestrogens, 8-prenylnaringenin (8-PN), which effectively combats menopausal symptoms and is being studied for its role in protecting against bone loss and heart disease.
Alfalfa: A naturally nutrient rich food, chlorophyll, vitamins (such as A, B6 and 12, C, D, E, K and P) and minerals (including magnesium, calcium, phosphorous and potassium) as well as being an abundant source of alkaloids, isoflavones, coumarins, sterols and essential enzymes. Due to its wealth of nutrients and also because it is a cooling, sweet, astringent legume, alfalfa has been long used to relieve menopause symptoms including hot flashes and night sweats.
Siberian Ginseng: A traditional tonic herb to support health and wellbeing, Siberian Ginseng is as an adaptogen (plants that help your body respond to stress, anxiety, fatigue and support overall wellbeing) and supports your body to perform at optimum levels and also counter the negative effects of stress. A rich source of phytonutrients and eleutherosides (immune stimulating), ginseng is also commonly used by women to alleviate menopause symptoms.
Atriplex Halimus: (aka Mediterranean Saltbush) A nutritious plant high in protein as well as vitamins (C, A and D) and minerals (such as chromium).
Kelp: Sea kelp is a natural source of vitamins A, B1, B2, C, D and E as well as essential minerals including zinc, iodine, magnesium, iron, potassium, copper and calcium, containing the highest natural concentration of calcium of any food (10 times more than milk). Supports the thyroid gland, which is a key sex gland stimulator and can help to relieve menopausal symptoms, such as hot flashes, weight gain, moodiness and menopausal tension.
