Rhubarb is particularly effective at interacting with the digestive system. It contains anthraquinones, including rhein and emodin and their glycosides (e.g. glucorhein), which have natural cathartic (releasing) and laxative properties and is therefore very useful as a cathartic in case of constipation. It is a naturally strong herbal laxative, astringent and bitter, gastric stimulant, anti-inflammatory, stomachic, tonic and anti-septic. Also widely used for disorders of the liver, gallbladder and stomach.
Glucomannan is a water soluble dietary fibre effective as a bulk forming laxative and particularly effective in the treatment of constipation. Also used in the treatment of diverticular disease (digestive conditions that affect the large intestine/colon where small bulges or pockets develop in the intestine lining and these pockets often become inflamed or infected)
Cayenne is regarded by most herbalists as one of the purest and safest stimulants known, opening up every tissue in the body to help increase blood flow. Used to increase gastrointestinal secretions and benefit poor digestion. Acts as an anti spasmodic for pain relief and is also a carminative (soothe digestive tract)
Sugar Beet Fibre is scientifically proven to contribute to an increase in faecal bulk in two ways:
- the insoluble fibre components increase the absorption of water in the large intestine while
- the soluble components are fermented by bacteria in the large intestine causing an increase in bacterial mass for better digestion and immune function.
Dandelion Root is traditionally used as a gentle laxative, a digestive aid, to treat liver and kidney problems and to relieve inflammation, boils, fever and diarrhoea, stimulate the appetite and promote digestion.
Aloe Vera Leaf contains chloride, which eases the process of bowel release by increasing the water level in the stool. It also contains a substance called aloin, which when dried is used to create traditional laxatives. Aloe also contains compounds called anthraquinones, including aloin, aloe-emodin, barbaloin and aloectic acid, which provide powerful relief for constipation.
Ginger Root alleviates occasional gas, bloating and nausea. Ginger is a hot bitter herb and promotes gastric acidity to aid digestion. Traditionally used for stomach conditions due to its anti inflammatory, carminative, anti spasmodic, expectorant (increases bronchial mucous), vasodilator and circulatory stimulant properties. Promotes gastric secretions in cases of achlorhydria (absence or reduction of hydrochloric acid in stomach juice causing poor digestion).
Nettle Leaf is high in chlorophyll, multi vitamins (especially vitamin C), serotonin, histamine, acetyl-choline, minerals (especially iron), calcium, silica and a range of other digestive cleansing and protective nutrients. This makes nettles a fantastic tonic for those feeling run down or tired, as they rebuild and cleanse the system (including your liver and blood). A lesser-known effect of nettle leaf is its ability to gently stimulate the bowels and also act as a diuretic.
Barberry: Technically referred to as Berberis vulgaris, this amazing bark contains an alkaloid known as berberine and supports your liver, gallbladder, spleen and bowel function. Is also an effective antiseptic and antibacterial when taken orally and is beneficial against dysbiosis, stimulates bile flow, eases liver congestion. Eases an inflamed gallbladder and/or intestine and is a powerful tonic for your spleen and pancreas.
Black Aged Garlic: Boasting a wide range of beneficial properties including being antibacterial, antiparasitic, antispasmodic, anti dyspeptic, anti blood clotting as well as lowering cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Traditionally used to treat dysentery, typhoid, cholera, bacterial food poisoning and intestinal worms.
What is black garlic and why is it different?
Black garlic is fermented raw garlic, increasing its antioxidant, sulphur and s-allyl-cysteine (SAC) levels. SAC is an amino acid and is powerfully antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and anticancer.
