According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)

  • High fibre, fibre is a key ingredient to a healthy, varied and balanced diet.
  • Sugar beet fibre contributes to an increase in faecal bulk.

Psyllium Husk: Rich in soluble fibre and an ideal dietary supplement for maintaining regular and healthy bowels. It is a retention fibre, which gives bulk to stools by absorbing water (up 20 times its own weight). This gives the bowel wall something to work on and lets it push matter through quickly via peristalsis (muscle movement). Fibre also stimulates natural bacteria in the bowel for optimum healthy digestion. When water is added to psyllium husks, a soft gel is formed, which helps unwanted waste and toxins in the colon to be carried through smoothly and efficiently, with no straining or discomfort.

Rhubarb: An excellent digestive system support with natural cathartic (releasing) and laxative properties helping gently ease constipation. A naturally strong herbal laxative, astringent and bitter, gastric stimulant, anti inflammatory, stomachic, tonic and anti septic. Also widely used for disorders of the liver, gallbladder and stomach.

Broccoli: A source of glucoraphanin, which creates sulforaphane when chewed or swallowed, a compound which accelerates the body’s ability to detoxify from various pollutants. As with kale sprouts, these sprouts are also notable for their high levels of glucosinolates, and more  importantly, their metabolites isothiocyanates. Also a natural rich source of carbohydrates, including dietary fibre, to support the digestive system, bowel regularity and stable blood sugar levels.

Flaxseed: Most plant foods contain at least small amounts of phytonutrients called lignans. Lignans are unique fibre related polyphenols that provide us with antioxidant benefits, fibre like benefits, and also act as phytoestrogens. Among all commonly eaten foods, researchers now rank flaxseeds as the number 1 source of lignans in the human diet. Flaxseeds contain about 7 times as many lignans as the closest runner-up food (sesame seeds). They contain about 338 times as many lignans as sunflower seeds, 475 times as many as cashew nuts, and 3,200 times as many lignans as peanuts. When we think about antioxidant-rich foods, the first foods that come to mind are typically vegetables and fruits. Of course, foods in both of these food groups can be outstanding sources of antioxidants! Yet according to recent research, flaxseeds also belong high up on our list of antioxidant-rich foods. When flaxseeds are compared with other commonly eaten foods in terms of their total polyphenol content (polyphenols are one very important group of antioxidants), flaxseeds rank 9th among 100 commonly eaten foods. The antioxidant benefits of flaxseeds have long been associated with prevention of cardiovascular diseases and have recently also been tied to decreased insulin resistance.

Sugar Beet Fibre: Contributes to an increase in faecal bulk in two ways:

  1. the insoluble fibre components increase the absorption of water in the large intestine while
  2. the soluble components are fermented by bacteria in the large intestine  causing an increase in bacterial mass for better digestion and immune function.

Prune: Prunes and their juice contain mild laxatives, including phenolic compounds and a number of different sugars like sucrose, fructose and sorbitol that help in drawing fluid into the intestines, thereby helping the passage of waste out of the body. Sorbitol metabolises slowly and helps to support healthy digestive processes. Prunes also contain high levels of antioxidants and dietary fibre and are well known for their contribution to the maintenance of a healthy bowel and in gently alleviating constipation.

Fenugreek Seed: loaded with antioxidants and has a wide variety of health benefits including laxative and anti-parasitic actions, soothes irritated tissues, lowers fever, reduces blood sugar, improves digestion, promotes healing, stimulates the immune system and aids in the removal of toxins from the body through lymph nodes. Fenugreek seeds are rich in lipids, protein, protease inhibitors, alkaloids, mucilaginous fibre, phosphorus, iron, calcium, niacin, vitamin C, selenium and many other nutrients and may help reduce fatty tissue to aid natural weight loss.

Apple Pectin: Apples are a rich source of pectin, a naturally occurring carbohydrate, which is particularly good at helping to lower blood cholesterol levels. The liver pumps excess cholesterol into the bile, which then enters the intestines. If pectin is present in the intestines it will bind with the cholesterol and take it out of the body. Pectin also converts into galacturonic acid, which can combine with heavy metals (such as lead and mercury) and certain radioactive materials in the gut and take them out of the body. For those prone to constipation, pectin can provide a gentle form of fibre, which acts as a bulk laxative and as well as helping remove toxins from the intestines.

Fig Fruit: One of the highest natural plant sources of calcium, fibre, copper, manganese, magnesium, potassium and vitamin K, figs also naturally contain a wealth of other nutrients and antioxidants. A natural and gentle laxative, figs are also a good source of flavonoids and polyphenols, including gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, syringic acid, catechin, epicatechin, rutin, pectin and the indigestible food fibre lignin, which retains water and helps bulk up the stool.

Carrot: A good source of thiamin, niacin, folate and vitamin B6 (which act as co-factors to enzymes during substrate metabolism in the body), as well as manganese and a very good source of dietary fibre, carotenes, vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin K and potassium. Carotenes are converted into vitamin A in the liver cells. Beta-carotene is the major carotene present in these roots, a powerful antioxidant and a nutrient involved in all of the functions of vitamin A, such as maintaining good eye health, reproduction (sperm production), maintenance of epithelial integrity, growth and development. Carrots are also rich in the poly-acetylene antioxidant, falcarinol.

Fennel Seed: A gentle warming agent for delicate stomachs, fennel is also a carminative (relieves flatulence) and is anti spasmodic. A natural digestive and gut soother, it helps to gently reduce wind and regulate bowel movements. It can also relax the intestines and reduce bloating caused by digestive disorders.
