According to the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA)
- Choline contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism, normal lipid metabolism and to the maintenance of normal liver function.
- Biotin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal macronutrient metabolism, normal psychological function, normal hair and skin and the maintenance of normal mucous membranes.
Choline: A water soluble vitamin made in the liver and may also be consumed in the diet and both sources are important to maintain liver health. It has been found that diets lacking choline can lead to the development of fatty liver, liver damage and muscle damage. Choline contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism, normal lipid metabolism and the maintenance of normal liver function.
Biotin: Also known as vitamin B7 and necessary for cell growth, the production of fatty acids and the metabolism of fats and amino acids. It also assists in various metabolic reactions involving the transfer of carbon dioxide and helpful in maintaining a steady blood sugar level. A wide range of foods contain biotin, and intestinal bacteria synthesize it, which is then absorbed by the host. Biotin contributes to normal energy-yielding metabolism, normal functioning of the nervous system, normal macronutrient metabolism, normal psychological function, healthy hair and skin and the maintenance of mucous membranes.
Artichoke: Traditionally been used in herbal treatments to promote a healthy liver and efficient digestive system. Beneficial in lowering elevated blood lipids (cholesterol and triglycerides), lowering total serum levels while increasing beneficial HDL levels, cleanses the liver and benefits heart health. Effectively boosts the production of bile by the liver to break down fats. Contains the active ingredient, luteolin, and the antioxidants caffeic acid, cynarin and cholorgenic acid. These all act to protect liver cells from damage and, at the same time, stimulate the production of bile acid into the digestive tract.
Black Aged Garlic: Boasting a wide range of beneficial properties including being antibacterial, antiparasitic, antispasmodic, anti dyspeptic, anti blood clotting as well as lowering cholesterol, triglycerides and blood pressure. Traditionally used to treat dysentery, typhoid, cholera, bacterial food poisoning and intestinal worms.
What is black garlic and why is it different?
Black garlic is fermented raw garlic, increasing its antioxidant, sulphur and s-allyl-cysteine (SAC) levels. SAC is an amino acid and is powerfully antioxidant, anti inflammatory and anti cancer.
Beetroot: Excellent source of carbohydrates and proteins and rich in a variety of vitamins (including vitamins A, B and C), minerals (including magnesium, manganese, sodium, potassium, calcium and phosphorus), antioxidants and other many other beneficial nutrients such as soluble fibre, iron, folic acid and betaine. It has a very low caloric value, is almost entirely free of fats and has a low glycaemic load while being extraordinarily rich in dietary nitrate, making it popular with athletes, sports people and those into fitness. Nitrate leads to a reduction in oxygen uptake, increasing stamina and making exercise less tiring and research has shown the positive effects beetroot can have on exercise performance and muscle growth making it a popular supplement during times of extreme training when demands for energy and recovery are high.
Burdock Root: Burdock is one of the most potent tonics in herbalism. It contains a broad spectrum of nutrients, including fatty acids, organic acids, phenolic acids, lignans, sesquiterpenes, tannin, mucilage and inulin (a prebiotic), along with iron, sulphur and B-vitamins. An efficient blood purifier widely used to support liver function and as a cleansing botanical. Toxins that have been displaced by the burdock will need to be quickly eliminated by dandelion and the other herbs in this formula, which have been carefully chosen to partner burdock in its clearing actions. A hepatic herb (assists the liver in its functions and promotes the flow of bile), hepatoprotective, cholesterol reducer and general body detoxifier. Also a diuretic and can help with skin problems such as eczema, psoriasis and dermatitis.
Parsley Leaf: A highly nutritious member of the umbelliferous vegetable family, parsley has many health benefits and contains a host of nutrients, such as vitamins A, C and E, bioflavonoids, iron, folic acid, volatile oils, coumarins, flavonoids, chlorophyll and other powerful antioxidants and phyto nutrients. Its iron content is high (around twice as much as spinach) and is also a good source of manganese, calcium and potassium. Raw parsley and juice is used as a blood cleanser and to dissolve the sticky deposits in veins, maintain blood vessel wall elasticity, help break down small kidney stones and gallstones, is a diuretic and is also a natural breath freshener.
Turmeric: Most commonly known for its powerful anti inflammatory actions sdue to its active compound, curcumin. Turmeric also helps combat the effects of oxidation (antioxidant activity), allows efficient communication between cells, stabilises blood sugar and fat levels and improves levels of omega 3 fatty acid (DHA) in the brain. The anti inflammatory and antioxidant effects of curcumin have are associated with improved regulation of blood pressure and decreased risk of several types of cardiovascular disease. Recent studies on turmeric show it has potential for general detoxification, improving cognitive function, maintaining blood sugar balance and benefiting kidney function, as well as lessening the degree of severity associated with certain forms of arthritis and certain digestive disorders.
Liquorice Root: Stimulates the production of digestive fluids and bile, soothes ulcers, helps reduce intestinal inflammation, and supports the healthy function of the kidneys, liver and bladder. Its action in soothing ulcers is unique. Rather than inhibit the release of acid, licorice stimulates the normal defense mechanisms that prevent ulcer formation. Specifically, licorice improves both the quality and quantity of the protective substances that line the intestinal tract; increases the life span of the intestinal cell; and improves blood supply to the intestinal lining. Stimulates two steroids, cortisone and aldosterone, which help to naturally reduce inflammation. It also inhibits the growth of several DNA and RNA viruses, inactivating herpes simplex virus particles.
Caution: not to be used in cases of untreated high blood pressure, due to its effect on aldosterone.
Cayenne: Naturally curbing appetite, cayenne also stimulates circulation, speeds up metabolism and helps the body to burn extra calories (cayenne can increase the metabolic rate by up to 25%). When you eat a spicy food such as cayenne, it causes your body’s temperature to rise. Your body then goes into a “cool down” mode, which results in the burning of calories. Capsaicin is the main active ingredient in cayenne pepper and research shows that it is a thermogenic agent (speeds up metabolism and decreases appetite). Increasing metabolism helps to burn fat faster, which in turn enhances energy production allowing you to be more active for longer. Cayenne produces natural warmth, helping to equalise circulation, especially in the elderly. It accelerates the oxygenation of cells, delivering live giving oxygen to every organ and tissue. Is well suited to people of feeble constitution, those with poor circulation, low energy levels and poor appetite.
Fennel Seed: A gentle warming agent for delicate stomachs, fennel is also a carminative (relieves flatulence) and is anti spasmodic. A natural digestive and gut soother, it helps to gently reduce wind and regulate bowel movements.
N-Acetyl L- Cysteine (NAC): An amino acid and precursor to glutathione, the body’s most abundant antioxidant found in virtually every cell. Research show that it can protect the body against ailments such as bronchitis, asthma, emphysema and sinusitis. Studies show that NAC can prevent damaging changes to DNA caused by the dangerous chemicals in cigarette smoke making this a must have supplement for those who smoke or have smoked. NAC is a powerful antioxidant produced in living organisms from the amino acid cysteine and is a sulphur containing amino acid derivative found naturally in foods, It works by helping to eliminate free radicals and heavy metals from the body therefore improving overall cellular health and productivity. It helps the body to neutralise toxins and is a chelator (eliminator) of heavy metals (such as mercury from dental amalgam fillings, cadmium, lead and toxins from cigarette smoke). The sulphur content has also been linked to enhanced resistance to viral infections. Athletes have found that it helps them recover more quickly after training sessions.
NOTE: do not use NAC if you suffer from, or suspect you have peptic ulcers.
Alpha Lipoic Acid (ALA): Lipoic acid is known as the universal antioxidant and plays a unique role in defending your body against free radical damage. With powerful liver cleansing and protective properties, ALA also helps to stabalise blood sugar levels and reduce insulin resistance, a common complaint in middle aged men and women, which can lead to a range of serious health problems. Athletes report that they experience far less muscle soreness, fatigue and damage following exercise, when taking this compound.
Ginger Root: A warming/hot herb beneficial in relieving occasional gas, bloating and nausea. Traditionally used for stomach conditions due to its anti inflammatory, carminative, anti spasmodic, expectorant (increases bronchial mucous), vasodilator and circulatory stimulant properties. Promotes gastric secretions in cases of achlorhydria (absence or reduction of hydrochloric acid in stomach juice causing poor digestion).
Dandelion Root: Naturally rich in antioxidants, supports your digestive system and is ideal for maintaining healthy urinary tract function. Also an excellent source of vitamins A, B, C, E, K and folate, plus iron, calcium, magnesium and potassium. Considered to be a blood purifier and is widely used to treat poor digestion, kidney problems, joint problems, water retention and diseases of the liver, such as hepatitis. Naturally rich in lecithin, believed to protect the liver against cirrhosis. Dandelion is a great tonic for people with sluggish liver function due to alcohol abuse or poor diet. The increase in bile flow can help improve fat (including cholesterol) metabolism in the body and is an excellent blood cleanser.
